Elizabeth Radley Anderson, a longtime resident of Greenwich, Conn., and Edgartown, died on July 30 following complications from a stroke. She was 75.
Born on June 13, 1935, in Stamford, Conn., to Eleanor Bartram Radley and John J. Radley Jr., Liz was graduated from the Greenwich Country Day School and Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn. She attended Smith College in Northampton and was graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School in New York city.
Family and friends were the focus of Liz Anderson’s life. She spent a great deal of time keeping in touch with those she knew. A remarkable and much admired mother, she was a cheerleader of others and used her talents and determination to help organizations both on the mainland — Greenwich Country Day School, Putnam Indian Field School and the Greenwich Skating Club — and on the Island, notably Sail Martha’s Vineyard, which helps Vineyard youngsters learn to sail and become acquainted with the life, recreation and industry of the Island waterfront, as well as its traditions.
Liz, the third of four daughters, first came to Edgartown more than 60 years ago with her mother and father, who in 1950 built a handsome single-story house on Edgartown harbor, not far to the south of Collins Beach. The garden of her own home on Dunham Road, just behind her parents’ house, drew the admiration of friends and passersby, blooming lavishly each season with the zinnias and dahlias that she loved.
A woman of diverse interests, Liz was known for her ability to bring people together, her strong sense of loyalty and her devotion to organizations that make a difference to children and families in the community. To honor the late Nancy Haskell of Edgartown, a close family friend who was one of the founders of Sail Martha’s Vineyard, she embraced the cause and contributed to the nonprofit group. With family and friends, she journeyed at the end of each August to Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs, where she thrilled to the annual fireworks, her favorite night of the summer. She was a past member of the Edgartown Yacht Club and Chappaquiddick Beach Club and had close friends all across the Vineyard.
In Greenwich, Liz served on, and for a term chaired, the board of Family Centers, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of individual, family and community life through education and human service programs in Greenwich and the surrounding communities. Following her tenure on the board, she chaired two major fundraisers for the group, and in 1994 she was chosen as the first recipient of the Helen Gratz Rockefeller Outstanding Volunteerism Award, the organization’s highest honor.
Her marriage to the late Douglas S.H. Anderson ended in divorce. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Katy and Chris Gray, and granddaughters Eleanor and Lulu Gray of Greenwich. She is also survived by her sister, Edie Radley of Edgartown, and many nieces and nephews, as well as a tremendous circle of friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for this morning, August 6, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Edgartown. Interment at Putnam Cemetery preceded a funeral service on Wednesday, August 4 at Christ Church in Greenwich.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Liz’s name to Sail Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1998, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
