James (Jim) Eddy Maveety of Vineyard Haven died Thursday, August 5, at the Falmouth Hospital. He was 69.

Jim was born as a twin on March 4, 1941, in Lewiston, Me., to the late Hazel (Eddy) and Glen Maveety. Jim’s father worked for the government and the family moved frequently, living in many states before Jim graduated from Las Cruces High School in New Mexico.

As a young man, he worked in several hospitals on the South Shore as an orderly. He always spoke about the patients he helped. Jim was married to Carole Ward in 1968. They had two children, Melinda and Kimberly, and lived in Marshfield until their divorce in 1978. He belonged to the Marshfield United Methodist Church and loved singing in the choir. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and sci-fi movies. He drove tractor trailer trucks for many years before settling in Quartzsite, Ariz., where he lived for 15 years.

He moved to the Vineyard in 2005 to be closer to his family.

He is survived by his twin brother, Guy, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; his two daughters, Melinda and Kimberly; four grandchildren, Allyssa Maveety, David and Jason Millen and Ethan Lefebvre; also by his former wife, Carole, all of Vineyard Haven, and by his many friends from Arizona.

A memorial service attended by his family was held on Monday, August 9. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral home in Oak Bluffs.
