Gary Southworth Mosher died on Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009, after a long illness.
A native of Martha’s Vineyard, he was born on October 27, 1930, to Philip C. and Vivian (Southworth) Mosher. He was educated at Tisbury School and graduated in 1948. Gary went on to study at Bliss Electrical School. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953. Gary wed Helen Medeiros in 1955 and they were married for 53 years.
A man of many facets, Gary, in his youth, worked at Mosher Photo Service for his father, and later at Crowell Coal Company. He started two businesses of his own: Gary’s Bike Rentals and Gary’s Oil Burner Service. He was also a Master Plumber. In addition, Gary was recognized as a fine trumpet player and was a member of the Vineyard Haven Band for over 60 years. He was a member of the Masonic Order and was a volunteer fireman for many years in the Town of Tisbury.
He leaves behind a daughter, Martha M. Child, and her husband, John W. Child, three step-grandchildren, Lori-Ann Messina, Amy Ruth Goodwin and Thomas F. Child, four step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Gary is survived by his brother, Thomas Mosher, and sister, Janice Rippcondi, and their spouses. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in November of 2008.
His graveside service will be held on Monday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at the Oak Grove Cemetery, State Road, Vineyard Haven, officiated by Rev. Roger Spinney. Military honors are provided by the veterans of Martha’s Vineyard and a Masonic service will be performed by the Oriental-MV Masonic Lodge.
