Raymond J. Moreis Sr. of Oak Bluffs died on Saturday, April 25 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 80.

Raymond was born in Vineyard Haven on Nov. 27, 1928, and attended the Tisbury School. He helped out the family at a young age by scalloping.

He enlisted in the Army in March of 1951 during the Korean War and was later discharged from the Army Reserves in 1957.

Upon returning from the service he worked at Grant Brothers and also worked security in the camp ground. He was employed in the construction of the bulkhead and of the Schoolhouse on School street in Oak Bluffs. He later started painting and started his own business, Ray Moreis Painting. Ray retired from the Oak Bluffs landfill station.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening and spending time with his family. He also was involved as a counselor with the Vineyard House programs.

He was the husband of Sybil M. (Gonsalves) Moreis and the father of Raymond J. Moreis Jr., Eloise M. Boales, Keith Moreis, Celeste M. Ventura, Vanessa A. Ventura, Eric Moreis, Carla Moreis, Courtney E. Moreis, Patricia M. Moreis and Lisa Roberts.

He was the brother of Anna Mae Cecelio, Cynthia Viera, James Moreis, Madeline Moreis, Josephine Tucker, Joseph Araujo, Theophilus (T.M.) Araujo, David Araujo, Lena Araujo, Julio Araujo Jr. and John Araujo.

He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Peter A. Moreis and Mary Emelia (Silvia) Moreis Araujo and his step-father, Julio B. Araujo; and by his brothers, Peter (Pop) Moreis, William Moreis and Paul Araujo.

A funeral service was held on April 30 in the Trinity United Methodist Church in the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs followed by interment in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs with military honors provided by the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.

Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice.
