Awarded Dickinson Scholarship
Emma Frizzell of Vineyard Haven was recently awarded a John Dickinson Scholarship from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. A senior at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, she is the daughter of Leslie Frizzell of Vineyard Haven and Bill Frizzell. The scholarship is awarded to first-year student applicants to Dickinson College in recognition of superior academic achievement, community activities and leadership in high school. It is renewable for three additional years of resident study at Dickinson or an affiliated academic year study abroad program.
Earns Business Degree
Michael Richard Giordano earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Saint Michael’s College on May 14 on the campus of the liberal arts residential Catholic college in Burlington, Vt. He is the son of Richard and Nancy Giordano of Oak Bluffs.
Loyola University Degrees
The following Island students received degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans, La., on May 26: Caleb Carr of Vineyard Haven, bachelor of arts, college of social sciences; George Howard of Vineyard Haven, master of business administration degree from the college of business.
Receives Nursing Degree
Gwendolyn Elizabeth Mayhew of Chilmark graduated from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa., with a bachelor of science degree in nursing on May 16. She served as secretary of the honor and judicial board at the college, and earned the freshman prize for honor. She was a Pennsylvania athletic conference student athlete for cross country and lacrosse. She gained her clinical experience at Lehigh Valley Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in Lehigh Valley, Pa. She will be commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy Nurse Corps and will work as a medical and surgical nurse at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. She is the daughter of Lois and Gregory Mayhew of Chilmark.
UMass Dartmouth Degree
Jared C. Montrowl of West Tisbury received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
Dean’s List
Grace Murphy of West Tisbury, a senior at Salve Regina University, has been named to the Dean’s List for the Spring 2009 semester.
Hamilton College Prizewinner
Samantha Rabin, daughter of Karen and Steven Rabin of Edgartown, was awarded the Raphael Lemkin Essay Prize at Hamilton College’s annual Class and Charter Day, held on May 8.
The Ralphael Lemkin Essay Prize was established by an alumnus in memory of Raphael Lemkin, a distinguished European academician, survivor of the Holocaust and inspirer of the United Nations Convention on Genocide. It is awarded to the student writing the best essay on a topic related to Mr. Lemkin’s concerns and reflecting his ideals.
Ms. Rabin is a sophomore majoring in sociology at Hamilton and is a graduate of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
Bryant University Graduate
Michael Shea of Vineyard Haven was awarded a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Bryant University on Saturday, May 16.
Receives Education Degree
Bonnie Shumrak, daughter of Peter and Jeanne Shumrak of Natick and Oak Bluffs, graduated from Salem State College with a bachelor of science degree in education. She is a preschool teacher in Wellesley and a figure skating coach.
Dean’s List at St. Michael’s
Michael R. Giordano, son of Richard and Nancy Giordano of Oak Bluffs, and Matthew M. Seklecki, son of Daniel Seklecki and Catherine MacDonald of Vineyard Haven, were named to the spring 2009 dean’s list at St. Michael’s College in Burlington, Vt.
Phillips Academy Honor Roll
Julia S. MacNelly of West Tisbury, a member of the Class of 2009, has been named to the honor roll at Phillips Academy for the winter term. To be named to the honor roll, students must maintain at least a five-point grade average on a six-point scale.
Phillips Academy, also known as Andover, is a coeducational, nonprofit, independent high school of 1,100 students, known for its extensive and rigorous academic program.
Hamilton College Graduate
Joyanne and Steven Flanders of Chilmark proudly announce the graduation of their daughter Genevieve Flanders from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., with a bachelor of arts degree in neuroscience, on May 24.
Wheaton College Graduate
Elyse Fortes, daughter of Barbara and Alan Fortes of Vineyard Haven, graduated cum laude from Wheaton College in Norton with a bachelor of arts degree in studio art on May 16.
Institute of Technology Degrees
Aaron Metell and James O’Donnell of Vineyard Haven and Brian Lambos of Edgartown recently graduated with honors from New England Institute of Technology. Mr. Metell received a bachelor of science degree and Mr. O’Donnell and Mr. Lambos received associate in science degrees on May 3.
Gifted Student Achievement
Alec Cobban, a student at the Edgartown School, was recently honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children hosted by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. He was invited to the ceremony based on an exceptional performance on a rigorous above-grade-level test that is given to students in second through eighth grade. The Johns Hopkins program is the oldest program for gifted students in the country.
Salve Regina Dean’s List
Grace Murphy of West Tisbury, a senior at Salve Regina University, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester.
Receives MBA
Eric Simoni has received a master’s degree in business administration from the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. He is the son of Brian Simoni of Edgartown.
Accepted at MIT Summer Program
Michael Beauboeuf, a junior at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School, was recently accepted into the minority introduction to engineering and science program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Michael is the son of Emmanuel and Lolita Beauboeuf of Medford and the grandson of Chappaquiddick resident Gerald Jeffers.
Michael will take advanced classes in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, humanities, calculus and physics, as well as a choice of electives in several research and design classes.
He will also participate in a Genomics Laboratory research program at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
