Awards and Recognition
The Massachusetts Restaurant Association Educational Foundation recently honored Kathleen Coulter of Edgartown as one of 31 recipients of its ninth annual Making the Future Bright scholarship awards gala. Ms. Coulter attended Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and is currently attending the University of New Hampshire. Her scholarship sponsor is US Foodservice-Boston Group.
At its annual Recognition Day June 13 Falmouth Academy gave awards to the following Vineyard students:
Hillary Smith of Aquinnah received the upper school award for dedication in English. Hillary will attend Wheaton College in Norton in the fall.
Clara Maynard of Chilmark received the middle school award for distinction in math.
Literary magazine, resonance awards went to Emelia Armstead of Edgartown, third place, prose, for The Leaper, and to Kinsman Maynard of Chilmark, third place, poetry, for The Greatest Fool.
Niole Nelson of Vineyard Haven received the upper school award for dedication in drama.
And senior Elin Nelson of Vineyard Haven received the award for excellence and leadership in martial arts. Elin will be a freshman at Wellesley College in the fall.
Named to Dean’s List
Juliana Dye of Vineyard Haven has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at the University of Vermont. She is a first-year student and environmental studies major in the college of arts and sciences.
Olivia R. Fankuchen of Newport Beach, Calif. has received honors in grade 12 at Phillips Exeter Academy. Olivia is the daughter of seasonal Aquinnah residents Dr. Elliot Fankuchen and Dr. Lisa Kantrowitz.
Northeastern University has named the following Island students to the dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester: Melora M. Armstead, Kimberly Carter, Amy M. Bates, Michael R. Coulter, all of of Edgartown; Hannah Van Osten, Gabrielle A. Sullo of Oak Bluffs; Emily E. Laursen and Amanda L. Murphy of Vineyard Haven; and Emma S. Christensen of West Tisbury.
Jennifer Ross Reekie of West Tisbury, a senior and a management major at Bentley University, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester.
Tara Reynolds of Edgartown was named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for spring quarter 2009. She is an illustration major and is seeking a bachelor of fine arts degree.
The following Island students were named to the University of Massachusetts Boston dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester: Jennifer Chang and Ashley Spinney of Vineyard Haven, and Kenneth McGourty-Pimental of West Tisbury.
Receives Degree
Stephen John Brussard, the son of Sarah Brussard and Stephen J. Brussard of Edgartown, received a bachelor of arts degree with a major in economics from Roanoke College on May 2. He is a graduate of the Kent School.
Brandon Cammeron Nygard of Vineyard Haven recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Mr. Nygard earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in broadcast design.
Elyse Marie Fortes of Vineyard Haven graduated from Wheaton College in Norton on May 16. Ms. Fortes graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in studio art.
Julia Friedman, daughter of Ralph Friedman and Deborah Milne of Vineyard Haven, received a bachelor of arts from Emory College of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., at its commencement ceremony on May 11.
Benjamin Gunn of Vineyard Haven graduated with a degree in criminal justice at the 116th commencement exercises at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, May 16.
Samantha A. Hackney, daughter of Mr. Sheldon F. Hackney and Mrs. Melissa M. Hackney of West Tisbury, graduated on May 24 from Amherst College in Amherst.
Ms. Hackney, who majored in French, entered Amherst College after transferring from University of Pennsylvania.
Cory James Heselton of West Tisbury graduated from Gettysburg College with a bachelor’s degree on May 17. He was a political science major.
Maria L. Littlefield recently received a bachelor of arts degree from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, The daughter of Ivory Littlefield and Lisa Epstein of West Tisbury and Deborah Van Handel of Milton, Conn., she majored in psychology with a minor in business.
She is presently employed at Fingerpaint Marketing, an advertising and marketing firm in Saratoga Springs, and plans to relocate to New York city in the fall.
Elora Mary Parker, of Rangeley, Me., and Edgartown, graduated from Kents Hill School in Kents Hill, Me. A former Island student, Elora will attend Johnson and Wales in Providence, R.I. for hospitality after spending the summer working as head lifeguard in Maine.
She is the daughter of Birgitta and John Parker of Edgartown, owners of Vineyard Decorators.
Matthew Scott Rossi of Edgartown recently graduated from Stonehill College with a bachelor of arts degree.
Joshua Wild of Vineyard Haven received a bachelor of arts degree, magna cum laude, from Merrimack College on May 17.
