It’s a double feature of classic choreography and the chaos of Wall Street on stage this weekend at The Yard.
First, world-renowned Isadora Duncan specialist Catherine Gallant will perform new choreography plus rarely performed pieces of early modern dance in a program featuring live piano music by Daniel Fox on Friday, August 28, at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, August 29 at 4 p.m. at the arts center on Middle Road in Chilmark.
The program will include all 16 of Duncan’s Brahms Waltzes Op. 39, The Many Faces of Love, Ms. Gallant’s Finally, and the solo from Anna Sokolow’s classic Lyric Suite.
Born in San Francisco in 1877, Ms. Duncan was known as the mother of modern dance, liberating dance from the confines of her time, shedding ballet slippers and corsets and seeking a movement vocabulary that would illuminate the human spirit and its connection to nature. She was the first to choreograph to music not originally written for dance, including the works of Chopin, Brahms, Schubert and Scriabin. Her bare limbs and bold approach drew controversy, especially in America.
On Saturday August 30, at 8 p.m. accomplished director resident Kay Matschullat, of Chilmark and New York city, presents a reading of a new work in progress, FAST.
FAST is an up-to-the-minute take on the unraveling of Wall Street through the travails of a tougher-than-nails woman who rose to the top of the financial world. Her unexpected dismissal leads her to a dialogue with the devil, though their exchange is not a traditional battle between good and evil. Her journey leads her to love, loss and cocktails with the infamous. The piece explores what happens to a high-achiever who is suddenly pushed to the edge and searching for a lifeline. After a fantasia of experiences and a duel with the devil, will she succumb to the dark side and reside there forever? FAST features music, including drinking songs and a lullaby or two.
New York actors Nina Hellman, Jeremy Shamos and Breed Wool will perform the reading, joined by Donavon Dietz, known for the wonderful Whale Nation, which he has performed on the Island, and Vineyard actors Sheryl Dagostino and Mac Young. Maggie Brelis will have her world premier in the role of the sagacious lobster.
