The Holly Society of America, an organization that promotes the use of holly plants in the landscape and research on hollies, is holding its 62nd Annual Meeting on this weekend at the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven. Martha’s Vineyard residents are invited to attend the Society’s informational seminars and/or plant auction on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Mansion House. Holly sprigs will be on display all day and will demonstrate the wide and colorful variability found among hollies, and anyone coming to view the sprigs during the morning can participate in a silent auction. Bidders need not be present to win. Also, books on knowing and growing holly will be on sale. The meeting’s Saturday morning session will start at 9 a.m. and features presentations on Native Hollies of Martha’s Vineyard and Island Native Landscape Champions, with Kris Henrickson of Going Native Nursery; The Polly Hill Arboretum: Past, Present & Future with Tom Clark of The Polly Hill Nursery; and Finding and Registering Your Own Holly with Bill Cannon, nurseryman and past president of the Holly Society. The afternoon session begins at 2 p.m. and will include an auction of rare or unusual hollies and companion plants. A nominal fee of $5 will be charged for attending either session, which can in turn be applied to the purchase of a $30 annual membership in the Society.
