Anne T. Crumm died Saturday, Oct. 24 after suffering a stroke at the Osborn Retirement Community in Rye, N.Y., where she lived for six years. She was 85. Her husband, Charles Crumm, predeceased her on the Vineyard where they had retired in 1988.

Born in New York city, the daughter of Alan and Annalee Temple, Anne was raised in Scarsdale, N.Y., and graduated from Scarsdale High School. She majored in English at Smith College and graduated in 1945 with a minor in architectural design as well.

Anne’s 1944 introduction and immediate attachment to the Vineyard continued to stimulate her interest in architectural design. Starting with her Makonikey summer home, she designed 16 homes for clients and friends for over 30 years. These homes, combining beauty with function showed a strong appreciation for a natural setting that became her trademark.

She was a board member of Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard and a member of the Want to Know Club. She had a deep appreciation and knowledge of fine arts, in particular contemporary art and music. She loved attending the Boston Symphony and museums. Anne and Charlie loved entertaining in their Crumm-designed home and “barn” in Makonikey where she put her creative talents to work in the kitchen.

She is survived by her three sons, Peter of Revere, Nick of Larchmont, N.Y., and Chad of Ithaca N.Y.; one daughter, Nina of Brisbane, Australia; and two grandchildren, Sam and Olivia of Larchmont, N.Y. Her sister Nancy lives in Southbury, Conn., and her brother Alan in Pittsford, N.Y.

Donations in Anne’s memory may be made to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 2549, Oak Bluffs MA 02557, or the Island Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1874, Vineyard Haven MA 02568.

Funeral services will be private.
