How heartbreaking to see the holes on Main street! Our sympathy goes to the owners of Moxie and the Bunch of Grapes. Although Café Moxie was under new management, both buildings and businesses have been long traditions. Certainly, the Bunch of Grapes is my favorite bookstore in the world. I remember Café Moxie when it was Popeye’s. Let us know what we can do to help.
My grandsons attended the street fair and proclaimed it a rousing success — well, the grandson who can talk did. Thanks to Ana Cecilio for driving my little family home and entertaining them so wonderfully at this annual party for the town and Cora Medeiros.
Iole, Chris, and Lilly went off to Grace Church Wednesday night to see the Performers Workshop Cabaret. What a great time they had while I babysat for the wee ones! Mark your calendars for tomorrow night, Saturday July 12, at 7:30 p.m. for the faculty concert at Katharine Cornell Theatre. The Performers Workshop accepts donations, but please come and enjoy the music. You will hear what the students have been working on so diligently. The group plans some events during next week at the senior centers, check your community calendars. The final concert is Thursday, July 17, at Union Chapel on Oak Bluffs at 7:30 p.m.
Looks like you’re up for a busy summer. Our Martha’s Vineyard Film Society makes its seasonal move to the Tabernacle on Tuesday, July 15, where you can view Zeb: A Schooner Life, followed by a question-and-answer session with Island filmmaker Gordon Massingham.
The children won’t be left out. Our library has scheduled a movie and popcorn for ages four and up on Wednesday, July 16 at 3 p.m. Corbyn and I will be in attendance.
If you want to get out of town, do so on Thursday, July 17 for the annual evening of discovery at the magnificent Vose family Tower Hill home in Edgartown. Cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and a live auction follows to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Reservations are required, call 508-627-4441 to make yours. Tickets are $150 each.
In other museum news, Professor Mary Beth Norton will speak there at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15. Dr. Norton, on the faculty at Cornell, has carefully researched the early history of the Island. The topic is, Did Martin Pring Land on Martha’s Vineyard in 1603? Visit mvmuseum.org for more information and coming speakers.
When you’re out and about does it look to you like every other person is pregnant? Let them know that the dear granddaughter of Henry and Mae Cronig, Bess Abrahams, is available this Sunday, July 13, at the Yard in Chilmark, to lead them in a pre-natal yoga workshop. Bess spent her summers here but lives and works in New York city where she has trained and certified in pre-natal instruction, a childbirth educator, served as a doula at many home births, and generally is interested in helping women and their partners make this a wonderful and memorable experience. This workshop is for couples, the cost is a mere $40 for the two of you. Class is from 1 to 3 p.m. There is no need to pre-register, but if you have any questions call 508-693-1577.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Mary Fuller, Alden Besse, Denny Freitas and Dennis White today. Tomorrow belongs to Veraniece Martins and Marfi Gagnon. July 13 is a party for Nancy McPartlin Gardella (not me), Jaron Schilling, Sally Dunkley, Karen Lobdell, Nevenka Daniels and Talula Goldberry Martins. July 14 honors Bob Wheeler, Ronda MacLeod and Alanna Majors. July 15 is for Pam Alley, Laurel Redington-Whitaker and Courtenay Stanley. July 16 is claimed by Daniel Manning, Shawna Medeiros, John Schilling, Karen English and Joey Hamel. And on July 17 Chris Clark, Daniel Van Landingham, Fred Benson, Jessica Slocum, Barbara Masters, and Jay and Dana Bangs take the cake. Many happy returns.
