A former Edgartown man charged 20 years ago in two separate incidents — for allegedly robbing Claudia’s jewelry store in Edgartown and an aggravated rape and burglary of a female victim, also in Edgartown — will appear in Dukes County Superior Court on Monday for a bail hearing during the fall court session.
Craig Federico, 56, formerly of Lagoon Road in Edgartown, was picked up by police in Florida recently where he has lived for a number of years. Mr. Federico was arrested by Edgartown police in August of 1987 and charged with aggravated rape, assault and battery and kidnapping.
Then in February of 1988 he was arrested and charged with allegedly burglarizing Claudia’s on Main street.
Mr. Federico was reportedly negotiating a plea bargain when he jumped bail and left the Island in October of 1988. A default warrant was issued on Oct. 19 of that year, and he has been missing ever since.
Edgartown police Sgt. Kenneth Johnson said yesterday that Mr. Federico was pulled over during a traffic stop in Florida earlier this year. When officers ran his information they learned of the outstanding warrant and he was later extradited to the Island.
He is currently being held without bail in the Edgartown house of correction.
He is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing before the Hon. John C. Crastley, an associate justice of the superior court, on Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. — the first day of the fall superior court session that runs through the end of this month.
Assistant Cape and Islands District Attorney Laura Marshard said yesterday Judge Crastley will likely take into account the fact that Mr. Federico fled 20 years ago when setting his bail. “The fact that he is a flight risk should be taken into account,” she said.
Also scheduled is a jury trial for Jeffrey Alley on Oct. 14. Mr. Alley is facing charges of distribution of a class B substance.
A jury trial is also scheduled on Oct. 21 for co-defendants Gregory Bray and Laurel Maciel, who each face charges of possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to distribute. Mr. Bray, 38, of Dorchester, and Ms. Maciel, 27, of Oak Bluffs, were arrested in February of 2007 by Oak Bluffs police in conjunction with state police and Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force.
