Ann Lucille (Grew) Baker died on Monday, Sept. 29 at the age of 83. She was the wife of the late W. Paul Baker, mother of eight children and a 13th generation Cape Codder.
She was born and raised in West Falmouth, graduating from Lawrence High School in 1943, the daughter of the late Eva L. (Baker) and Ernest W. Grew.
She had a great thirst for knowledge, loved to read historical novels and was an amateur historian and contributed to the research of Cape Cod histories. She loved a Scrabble challenge and was a fierce opponent creating multiple words in a single turn.
In addition to raising her eight children she helped her beloved husband run Cape & Islands Real Estate for over 30 years.
She kept a beautiful vegetable garden and enjoyed sharing that joy with her family and neighbors. She always had an eye out for the different species of birds that came with each Cape Cod season.
A devout Catholic, she served her St. Pius X Catholic Church parish as Sunday school director and Eucharistic minister for many years.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth. Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Morris & O’Connor Funeral Home in South Yarmouth.
She is survived by her children: Daniel of Effort, Pa., William of Clarksville, Tenn., Michael of Brighton, Kevin of Holliston, Mary of Delmar, N.Y., Steve of Boston, Brian of Lincoln, N.H. and Noreen of Vineyard Haven. She is also survived by her brother Thomas Grew of Bass River and by 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Childrens’ Book Collection of the West Yarmouth Library Association, 391 Main Street, West Yarmouth, MA 02673, for which she served as a member of the board of trustees for over 20 years.
