KATHIE CASE

I worked the polls on Tuesday and what a day. There was excitement and plenty of people still making up their minds. There were over 2,000 voters. Some were voting for the first time, either because they were just 18 or because they had recently become citizens. Some had people there taking pictures of them. It was a great day.
People have been asking what is going on in the front glass house at Donaroma’s. Well, here is the story. It is being redone with new paint and varnish and will be ready for the Evening of Enchantment on Dec. 12. The villages will be displayed there, and there will be a tree and decorations for a traditional look. The work is in progress and it is looking great. After the holidays it will be used as the florist shop and the main glass house in back will be closed for the winter. For some people, myself included, it brings back memories of the 1970s when the shop first opened. Everyone was excited when Mike started carrying house plants and of course the first year of Christmas trees. So mark your calendar for the first night of Christmas in Edgartown and a new — or should I say old — look at Donaroma’s.
Woodside Village will hold a Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a good way to start your shopping; they will have knitted items, crafts and baked goods.
Chris White was filling me in on her daughter Ariel. Ariel is in New York city and will graduate from Marymount Manhattan College in December. She is doing an internship at Forbes.com.
The Edgartown Mothers’ Club will have their annual auction on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Annette Smith’s house. This is a favorite among many members.
My niece Debbie was here this past weekend with her boyfriend, Rich, who had never been to the Island before. On Sunday we went down to the beach; it was beautiful but the wind reminded us what time of year it is and why we were the only ones having lunch there.
Paul Conroy Jr. left the Island on Tuesday and flew to Daytona Beach, Fla. He was met at the airport by Travis Macomber; they are sharing an apartment in Ormond Beach, Fla., where both are attending Wyotech. Paul is studying marine mechanics and Travis is studying motorcycle mechanics specializing in Asian makes and Harley Davidsons. They return to the Island in early July after graduation. Best of luck to both in this adventure.
Everyone is invited to the annual barnraisers’ ball on Saturday from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will play great music, people bring desserts to share, and it’s free.
Welcome home to Ursula Prada who is now back after three months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. She has already made it to the town hall to visit her coworkers.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. I will get the new school list and publish both weeks’ birthdays next week. Special wishes to my friend Wendy Rose today.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
