Katharine Brady Sutphin Ficks, a devoted mother and grandmother, philanthropist and volunteer died on Jan. 23 at her home in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was 95.
She had been a lifelong summer resident of Edgartown, where her father, Stuart B. Sutphin Sr., first began summering at the Colonial Inn in the 1930s, and in 1954 bought a home in Edgartown.
She was the wife of the late Gerald J. Ficks Sr., former president of the Ficks Reed Company in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Ficks attended Doherty School in Cincinnati and graduated from Miss Porter's in Farmington, Conn.
She was a kind and caring person not only to her family and numerous friends of all ages, but also to those in need. She had a deep concern for children who suffer from abuse, serious illness, and disease. This was reflected in her involvement with the Baby's Milk Fund and her lifelong devotion to the mission and future of Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. She started her service at the hospital as a member and eventually chairman on the house committee, which not just oversaw the maintenance and upkeep of facilities, but also provided housing for its 40 nursing students. She served as an active trustee of the hospital for more than 55 years, eventually reaching the status of trustee emeritus. Her philosophy as board member was to do whatever she could do and always be helpful. She attended board meetings as recently as four years ago.
Additionally, Mrs. Ficks was a past president of the Children's Hospital Thrift Shop in Cincinnati and a board member there for 50 years. An enthusiastic horticulturalist, she was a past president of the Garden Club of Cincinnati and a past president of the Civic Garden Center, where she was also a life member. She was an associate member of the board of directors at Maple Knoll Village; a former member of the Junior League of Cincinnati; a member of the Cincinnati Woman's Club; a member of the Colonial Dames; and a member of the Cincinnati Country Club, the Edgartown Yacht Club, and the Ocean Club of Florida.
She is survived by her son, Gerald J. Ficks Jr., also president of Ficks Reed, and his wife Trudie; and two grandsons, John S. and Philip L. Ficks.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Advent in Cincinnati.
Interment will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.
