Olga Larsen Simmerman, the eldest member of the Larsen family, died peacefully on Dec. 1 in Lincoln, Neb., at age 89. Her only daughter, Aimee Hubbard, was at her side.

Olga was born in Aalesund, Norway in 1918, the first daughter of Daniel and Kristine Larsen. At age six, she and her family, which by then included two brothers and a sister, left Norway and eventually settled in Menemsha on the road that has come to be known as Larsen Lane.

While working at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport for the U.S. Navy during World War II, she met her future husband, Lieut. Charles (Charlie) Irl Simmerman. Olga and Charlie settled in Evanston, Ill., where they raised Aimee. After Charlie’s death in 1975, Olga established a residence on Menemsha Crossroads in Chilmark.

Olga spent most of the ensuing years traveling with her sister, Nickolene (Nicka) Larsen Porter. Every summer they returned together to the Vineyard, hosting visits from children and grandchildren. Many remember seeing the two of them walking along the dock at Menemsha, smiling and laughing and enjoying the sunset crowd on summer evenings until Nicka’s death in 1984.

Olga moved to Nebraska to live with Aimee in 2000. She made several return trips to the Vineyard to visit with her brother, Louis and the rest of the extended Larsen family. Her most recent visit was last summer. Her nephew Thomas Larsen Porter accompanied her.

Olga is survived by her daughter and son in law, Aimee and Dennis Hubbard of Lincoln, Neb.; four grandsons, Michael, Derek, Brian and Steven and their wives and five great-grandchildren. Her brother, Louis Larsen lives in Chilmark and she also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in the Larsen family, most of whom live on the Vineyard. She was predeceased by her brothers, Bjarne Larsen, Dagbard Larsen and her sister, Nicka Porter and her older half-brother, Andreas Finvik of Tomrefjord, Norway.

There are no immediate plans for services. A private family interment will be held next spring. The family requests no flowers. Those who wish may make a contribution to the American Legion Post 257, 34 William street, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
