Elizabeth W. Bettencourt Was Native of Vineyard

Elizabeth West Bettencourt, originally of Chilmark and Edgartown, died Jan. 20 in Cookeville, Tenn.

Elizabeth was the youngest twin daughter of Capt. Elsworth Luce West, one of the last of the wooden whalers on the Island.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna Hackenberg and Peggy Daniels, both of Tennessee; her son, Jim Light, and his wife, Heather, of Nevada; sisters Doris Nevin from Chilmark and Eileen Caldwell from Florida; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Captain Ellsworth and Elsie West; her husband, Richard Bettencourt; her brothers, Robert and Albert West; and her sisters, Melba Jordan and Helen Drake, her twin.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, in Monroe, Tenn. Arrangements are under the care of Livingston Funeral Home.
