Granger Kenley Worked in Communications Field

Granger Farwell Kenly of Lake Forest, Ill., died at home on June 16 after a brief illness. He was 85. For the past 25 years, Mr. Kenly visited Edgartown with his wife, Stella Brown Kenly, daughter of the late Josephine and Robert P. Brown Jr., longtime summer residents.

Active in communications work and civic affairs in Chicago, Mr. Kenly retired in 1984 as senior vice president for corporate and investor relations of IC Industries (now the Whitman Corporation). Following his retirement, he served as career development officer for Lake Forest College. He was a consultant to the college until his death.

At various times, Mr. Kenly served on the boards of the Evanston Hospital, the Off-the-Street Club and the Lawson YMCA in Chicago, and the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He was a member of the Edgartown Yacht Club, the Chicago Club, the University Club of Chicago, the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, and the Hole-in-the-Wall Club and Naples Yacht Club in Naples, Fla.

He was graduated from Harvard University in 1941 and served as a major in the U.S. Air Force in Europe in World War II.

Granger Kenly will be remembered by everyone who knew him for his kindness to others, his mischievious sense of humor, and his ability to connect with and enjoy people. A true "gentle man," he will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends and associates.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Brown Kenly of Lake Forest, Ill; his daughter Margaret F. Kenly of Seattle, WA; his son Granger F. Kenly Jr. of Northfield, Ill.; three step-children, Josephine G. Angevin, Susan F. Angevin and Robert P.B. Angevin, and seven grandchildren. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Corning Kenly Sr. of Lake Forest, Ill., and Medford, Ore.

A memorial service was held on June 23 at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Ill. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
