Phyllis E. Fisher, 76, Was Island Hospital Librarian
Phyllis E. Fisher, nee Anderson, 76, died of cancer at her home in Edgartown on Dec. 8.
She was born in Somerville, in 1926 to Gustav and Sophie Anderson. She was a graduate of Newton-Wellesley Hospital of Nursing and obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston University. While serving as an Air Force nurse, she was stationed at numerous base hospitals throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East. She especially enjoyed her tours in Japan. Moving to New Hampshire, she pursued her interest in library science by completing courses at the University of New Hampshire. In 1979 she returned to her home in Edgartown. In 1984 she became the medical librarian of the Martha's Vineyard Hospital, a position she held for 11 years.
She is survived by a brother, Roland Anderson of Melbourne, Fla., and his family; her sister in law, Nell Anderson of Plymouth; her nephews, Alan W. Anderson and Mark D. Anderson and their wives, and her longtime friend, Shirley Hamby of Edgartown.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard, PO Box 2549, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
