Edgartown's Ruth Galvin Was Distinguished Writer
Ruth (Mehrtens) Galvin of Westwood and Edgartown died Oct. 23. She was the beloved wife of John T. Galvin, who predeceased her.
Mrs. Galvin was a graduate of Smith College and a Time-Duke fellow. She was a former contributing editor and correspondent for Time Inc. and an accomplished writer who was published in a variety of magazines and newspapers including American Heritage, Atlantic Monthly, London Economist, Fortune, Harvard magazine, The New York Times, Smithsonian magazine and World Monitor.
Mrs. Galvin was a trustee of the Boston Athenaeum and Smith College and a member of the Boston Smith Club, Massachusetts Historical Society and Tavern Club.
She is survived by a brother, Paul H. Mehrtens, and his wife, Mary Lou, of Longmeadow, nephews Paul H. Mehrtens Jr. of Wayland and Stephen R. Mehrtens of Brookline, and niece Jane Rutherford of Pennsylvania.
Funeral services will be private. Memorial donations in Mrs. Galvin's memory may be made to the Boston Athenaeum, 10 1/2 Beacon street, Boston, MA 02106.
