KATHIE CASE

Cool nights — that’s what we live for after hot summer nights. Cool sheets and pillow cases and a good night’s sleep. We have had some great nights and very nice days. Who could ask for more?
Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Brandon Steigelman, who celebrated his day August 18, Taylor Fauteux and Nicolas Vukota, who celebrated their day August 20, Anthony Chick, August 22 and to Michael Courtney, Joseph Serpa, and Aidan Varkonda, who all celebrate their day today, August 24.
Special birthday/anniversary wishes go out to Linley Dolby and her husband, David Weagle, who celebrate Linley’s birthday and their anniversary on August 23. Linley says it never rains on her birthday, so they planned their outside wedding on that day, and in the past nine years, it has still proven to be true. So here is to more sunshine and happiness to you both.
I think I have noticed a difference in the traffic. I drove out of Donaromas the other night and didn’t have to wait. I’m still in shock. But the Stop & Shop is still the same, so that brings me back to reality.
We went to the fireworks on Friday night, then Sunday we went to the fair. It was fun. We all loved people-watching, and the Vineyard Band was fantastic. They played the usual marches but also added some movie theme songs. Then the fireworks started and as usual captured our attention right from the beginning. The people who sat next to us said, “Wow what is the finale going to be like?” and I said, “loud,” and it was, and it was great.
The fair is like old home week. You see everyone you haven’t seen all summer, and more. This year it was like a Dukes County Savings Bank reunion. First it was Brenda Perry and Nola Mavro at the window, collecting the money for entrance, then inside we saw Cathy Bettencourt and Brooke Raymond. Then we ran into Ted Mayhew and Judy Mayhew and also Lynda Cryer. It was great to see everyone and catch up.
A broad-based host committee of Islanders is co-sponsoring an event featuring Angela Davis and Gina Dent. The event is today, August 24, 5:30-7 p.m. at the Union Chapel, Oak Bluffs. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. The event is co-sponsored by, and a benefit for, Jewish Voice for Peace. Tickets are available at TicketsMV.com, Alley’s General Store, Our Market, C’Est La Vie, Bunch of Grapes, Island Entertainment and Edgartown Books.
The Martha’s Vineyard Animal Shelter is holding a “Walk for the Animals” on Saturday October 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trade Winds Park in Oak Bluffs (rain date is Monday, October 8)) and they need volunteers for a variety of jobs. These include manning the water stops, helping with registration, handing out awards and lots of other activities.
There will be time for you to walk with your pet, as well. If you are able to help with the event, please call Pat Adler at 508-696-5901, or Duncan Ross at 508-693-0541 to sign up.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
