Scalloping season began on Monday this week, amid choppy seas and pouring rain. For now, there will be two level bushels per day per fisherman.
Thank you to Aquinnah highway superintendent Jay Smalley, Aquinnah selectmen Spencer Booker, James Newman and Beverly Wright, and Aquinnah town administrator Adam Wilson for their oversight in the repairs of the destruction caused by the recent storms. Repairs on the washed-out portion of Lobsterville were started this week by the White-Lynch Company. Severe damage was caused by Hurricane Sandy and then by the northeaster the following week. Reminder: the Aquinnah Public Library trustees Martha Vanderhoop, Betty Joslow and Jean Lince invite everyone to a holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 15 to meet the new director, Lisa Sherman. Festivities will be from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Up-Island Council on Aging will sponsor a holiday luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 20 at noon at Howes House. If you would like to attend, please call 508-693-2896 by Dec. 17 to reserve your space. Merrily Fenner and company will be performing their musical tunes for the festivities.

The elves have been rather busy decorating the hall and assisting with wrapping and preparations for this joyous occasion.

Chilmark Chocolates will be closing this week until next year, so stop by over the weekend for your holiday treats.
This week was spent at Greenberg Physical Therapy with Larry Greenberg and Deborah Shipkin getting me back into shape. I thank them immensely after suffering from such intense pain and discomfort. I am beginning to feel like new — well, sort of new, since there is not a rewind button. It is like old home week during my sessions, as there is always someone there to share their physical ailments and tales of aches and pains, but most important, laughter. At this rate I hope to be back together by the end of the year.
Michael Gilman returned home this week after spending time with his father, George Gilman, in Florida and assisting him following his recent surgery. Upon Mike’s return, he found out about the changes being made at WMVY.
Condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Gonsalves who passed away on Tuesday in New Bedford. Joe and his family were long-time residents of Lobsterville. He served on the Gay Head police force, retiring in 1992 after more than two decades of service. Services will be held this morning at St. Augustine’s Church at 11 a.m. Condolences to the family and friends of Anna Hagerty who passed away on Nov. 20 at her new home in Fredericksburg, Va. She passed away 45 years to the day of the death of her eldest son (and my schoolmate), William Hagerty, who was the first from Martha’s Vineyard to lose his life in Vietnam. Her daughter Jean Hagerty Francis was a co-worker at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where she was a nurse for 45 years. Dr. Richard Mulligan was at his Aquinnah home over the weekend, enjoying the wintertime sights and sounds of the Vineyard. We caught up with each other for a few moments in Edgartown.
Kathy Newman returned this week after a brief trip to Colorado and a visit with her son Peter and family.
Condolences to Genie O’Donnell, her husband, Paul, and their family in the loss of her mother, Bernice Howard, who passed away Nov. 21 in Florida. Services were held on Dec. 1 in Windsor, Conn. Condolences to the family of Charles Waters 3rd, who passed away Sunday, a multi-generational family friend. His services will be held in Bourne next week.
John Wightman has a display of Island Images with his new photographs and latest creations at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner through the holidays. Stop by for your treasures during banking hours.
