I have heard people say they are sick of the snow, can’t wait to see more snow, or that maybe spring will come early this year. Well, according to Punxsutawney Phil, spring will be six weeks early. But first we have to get through the snowstorm this weekend.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Paige Fiske, who celebrated her day Feb. 4;, Kazara Aldeborgh and Aiden Rogers, Feb. 6; and to Geovane Meikle and Camden Townes, who celebrate their day today, Feb. 8.

Congratulations to Dick and Carol Fligor who celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Two months ago they visited Naples, Fla., where they were married and where they lived for six winters, four of which they operated The Fligor’s store in the south. When the oldest of their four children was in first grade, they all settled down year-round in Edgartown. Congratulations, Carol and Dick; here is to many more years together.

The Edgartown Town Democratic Committee will hold a caucus this Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Edgartown library to review the proposed 2013 State Platform, plan for the special Senate election, and elect delegates to the 2013 state convention. All are welcome.

The Federated Church will join other Island churches in offering a free community meal. The lasagna luncheon will take place every Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. starting Feb. 10 until Sunday, March 24 in the Federated parish house on South Summer street. Debbie Jernegan is now accepting enrollment applications for Camp Super Kid! The camp is intended for children ages 2.9 to 7. Campers will journey into a magical world immersed within an adventurous book. In other camp news, Felix Neck is once again offering Fern & Feather Natural History Day Camp scholarships and discounts to year-round Vineyard residents. The camp offers children the opportunity to explore the 350-acre wildlife sanctuary with games, hands-on natural history lessons, hikes, stories and crafts. Programs are available for children entering grades prekindergarten through eighth grade. To apply for a scholarship, contact Marion Hammond at 508-627-4850. Pat Tyra was here last week staying with her brother, Gordon and his wife, Ann. Pat had lunch with many of the “regulars” at the Anchors on Friday. She also spent some time enjoying the decoy exhibit at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum where she was delighted to hear duck and hunting “stories” taped many years ago by Linsey Lee, including the voices of her father, Ed Tyra, Howard Andrews, Ham Luce, Basil Welch, and her classmate Eddie Belisle. If you haven’t visited this exhibit, she encourages all to do so. It has an interesting insight into Island hunting.

Pat also spent time in the old family 1834 homestead, selecting some of her mother’s handmade braided rugs for her own home and saying good-bye to her mother’s 1941 Fiesta dishes (a popular wedding present back then). They will be in the family estate sale next week (conducted by former classmate and neighbor Tommy Fisher and Tim Rush).

Now there will be only two houses in the four blocks of Planting Field Way still owned by the “old” neighborhood families. Such changes in our town.
