Well, the orioles (birds, that is) have returned to town. The late Emma Whiting had records to prove that they always return by the May 12. Anna Alley spotted one at our feeder yesterday morning. Bird watchers will be keeping a keen eye out all weekend.

The weekend weather was quite pleasant and seasonable. Baseball games and tennis matches were the chosen athletic activities. Many businesses are getting ready or have opened for the season. The Glass Works, Middletown Nursery and Bananas clothing store are now open. Roger Blake’s outdoor pie gazebo is open if the weather is decent, until next weekend when someone will be out there rain or shine.

The origin of Mother’s Day can be traced to Roman times. Closer to home, in 1912 West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother’s Day, and 99 years ago Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance, declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. It is her day, so take her to lunch, cook her dinner and do all the chores she has been asking you to do.

Emily Gadd of Bozeman, Mont., arrived last weekend to spend the summer at her Vineyard home on South Road. She can’t wait to begin preparing her garden, which yields a bountiful supply of vegetables each year. Emily reports that the winter was hard, but she looks forward to her visit. Welcome back, Emily!

Judy Hall, of Oklahoma City, Okla., was in town all last week. She is busy helping to plan a wedding for her daughter Emily. Emily and Whitney Brush plan to be married in the late summer.

Sal Laterra arrived on Wednesday and is the guest of Phyllis Meras. Phyllis is giving him a belated birthday dinner this evening. Sal took her out last night to celebrate her birthday.

Baron Von Ochs and his wife, Gudern, held a dinner party at their South Road home on Sunday night. Their guests were Phyllis Meras and myself.

Dan Waters started a Facebook page devoted to the Mill Pond. It is rapidly filling with comments, stories and pictures.

Mimi Davisson reports that you can join the Martha’s Vineyard Democrats on Saturday at Howes House from 9 to 10:30 a.m. to plan for participation in the campaign for the June 25 U.S. senate election.

Lynne Ditchfield, director of Adult & Community Education of Martha’s Vineyard, proudly reports that ACE MV has been recognized by Arts Learning with a Distinguished Community Arts Collaborative Institution Award. The awards ceremony will take place the evening of May 22 at Lesley University.

Deborah Yennie Moore is offering a wisdom healing (Zhineng) Qigong class at the Howes House every Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The first class is free, and for remaining classes you may donate what you can. Wisdom healing Qigong is helpful for enabling optimal well-being physically, emotionally and spiritually. Whether you are a teenager or over 90, in perfect health or barely able to function, the practice is the same and its impact equally significant. The practice is conducive to reducing stress, increasing happiness and energy, and alleviating disease and physical ailments. For more information, call Deb at 508-274-4241.

Old friend Judge B. L. Bird died at the age of 95 on Sunday. He and his wife were regular summer visitors to their Music street home for many years. He was a true southern gentleman, always helpful and kind to others. He also owned a very nice farm in Washington, Va. He will be missed by his many friends and neighbors. Our condolences to his children, Stephanie and Chris.

On May 24, 1946, the Grange announced that at their next meeting they would observe Children’s Night commencing at 7:30 p.m., on the second floor of the Agricultural Hall. All children in town were invited including those of Grange members. Refreshments were served by Lillian Magnuson, Alma Benson and Helen O’Donnell. Also a popular penny sale was held at the home of George and Lillian Magnuson on Edgartown Road that evening and it was sponsored by the home and community service committee of the Grange. The proceeds of the sale were donated to the parsonage repair fund.

Well, that is all of the social news for this week’s edition. If you have any news please call or e-mail me. A trivia tidbit: Arthur Godfrey began a lengthy stint as a morning disc jockey with his program on WCBS radio 70 years ago Monday, which was listened to by many Vineyarders every weekday. Have a great week.
