The summer is just flying by and Grace Church tells me so. It seems no sooner do I see the sign up on Fridays for lobster rolls, there it is again on the corner of Franklin and Woodlawn. I usually think, “Oh, they forgot to take it down,” but here it is, yet another Friday. Remember our American Legion Post 257 on Martin Road offers these popular sandwiches as well as chowder on Tuesdays.
So many people are visiting in my neighborhood I can’t catch up with their hosts to get the roll call. Everyone’s out beaching, boating, flying horses and eating. I suggest you and your house guests attend the wonderful annual Possible Dreams Auction on Sunday, July 28 at the Winnetu Resort and Restaurant in Katama. The doors open at 3:45 p.m. and the silent auction begins at 4 p.m. The live and very lively auction commences at 5 p.m. There will be a limited number of tickets available for dinner at the restaurant. This fundraiser always attracts the best and the brightest on our Island. In honor of our beloved Vineyard Haven seasonal resident who contributed so much to this event, the auction has been renamed the Art Buchwald Possible Dreams Auction. With the blessing of the Buchwald family, the new auctioneer will be Boston comedian Jimmy Tingle, who was always a big fan of Art’s. You know Art had a great talent for making us all laugh. But at the auction in 1999 Art said, “Let’s not forget why we’re here. Let me remind you this is not a game. We’re raising money for a lot of people who really need it. I don’t want that to get away from us.” Ample parking is free and available at the Farm Institute. Marci Nichols has designed beautiful windows at LeRoux at Home in our town to give you a preview of the dreams on the auction block. Here’s a hint: one dream wedding or event comes with a week at a villa in St. Kitts. Go Island hopping.
Nancy Shaw Cramer has a terrific show mounted at her gallery on Main street. This week’s artists are Leslie Baker, Antoinette Noble and Nancy’s own works. Stop in and enjoy.
Confidential to Lyn K: first Nonna speed-read it, then, because of my work, it took me longer. We finished the Whitey Bulger book by two Boston reporters, Cullen and Murphy. Talk about nightmares! Very interesting to read it along with the daily newspaper accounts of the trial. Since then, Nonna has gone through at least six other books. One I squeezed in which she really liked was Good Girls in Revolt by Lynn Povitch about the class action suit filed by the women workers at Newsweek in the early 1970s. It brought back all my memories of feminism’s second wave. I must thank our library and staff for keeping us supplied with such great and interesting material.
Anniversary bouquets go out to Ed and Lil Colligan on July 28.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Sal Esposito, Amy Hambrecht, Martha Chappell, Kellie Burtch, Sarah Swift and Rory Mayhew today. Tomorrow is a party for Vicki Burrows, Liz Masi, Bunty Bahal, Megan Honey, Michael Cobban, Connie Campbell, Theo Cowett and Caleb Enos. July 28 shines on Andrew Chappell, Keiko Corey, Sarah Moreis and Jane Martin. July 29 is claimed by Gerry Franzago, Chris Cimeno, Michael Desrosiers and Doug Sabin. July 30 honors Ashley Medeiros, Diane Hartmann and Jonathan Alexander Gardella. July 31 is shared by Gail Grain Monk and Tony Radoszewski. August 1 goes to Gisele Nascimento. And on August 2, Sam Marlin and Seniel Seward take the cake. Many happy returns.
