We are seeing a lot of rain but the forecast is predicting good weather for the rest of the festivities coming up in August. I am loving the cool nights and no mugginess.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Adeline Riley, Austin Smith and Bryan Somas, who all celebrated August 10, Grace Manson on August 12, and to William Pate and Deborah Silva who celebrated their day August 14.
The much-loved and respected pastor of the Federated Church, Rev. Jerry Fritz, will be retiring at the end of September. After 14 years in the pulpit of the Federated Church, he will depart for Ohio with his wife Kathleen. Their youngest daughter, Katelyn, has already left for Ohio to attend Kent State University. The Federated Church has had a search and call committee working since March of this year and is pleased to announce that an interim pastor has been named. He is the Rev. Terry Martinson who retired at the end of June from the pulpit of the Old South Union Church in Weymouth. He will be assuming the pastor’s responsibilities the first week of October. The church is excited to announce that a special transitional service will be held on August 25. Mr. Fritz and Mr. Martinson will share the service. This will be the first introduction of Mr. Martinson to the Federated Congregation. The service is at 10:30 a.m. at the meetinghouse in Edgartown and everyone is invited. A formal farewell event for Mr. Fritz and his wife will be held in September.
The Friends of the Edgartown Library helped librarian Jill Hughes and her staff host the Authors’ Breakfast for the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival last weekend: great food, flowers, and writers! Now the friends have finalized plans for their Pennywise Path USATF Certified Fun Run/Walk for all ages on Monday, September 2. The event will support the new library. Posters around town have information and registration forms are at the library. Sign up early! The first 100 participants will be guaranteed a T-shirt.
Tina Polleys and her children JJ and Audrey, and Gramma Lela Gilkes took a road trip to visit family. First they went to New Hampshire to visit Aunt Susan, then on to Agawam to see Gramma Barbara Polleys Parker and Charlie Parker.
They also had a visit with son and brother Christian Polleys who was happy to see his sister and brother. Christian is moving from Boston to New York to seek employment with his girlfriend Andrea. We wish them luck and happiness on this new adventure.
Steve Laverty’s family and friends are uniting to raise money to help pay for his medical expenses. Please show your support! Steve was diagnosed with terminal cancer about a month ago. It was a surprise to his family and friends. Steve did everything right to find out if he had cancer. He got MRI’s, CT scans and even a colonoscopy, but they all came up with the same result . . . no cancer. He ended up having to have surgery and the doctor found that he was riddled with cancer. They have given him six months, but he has no way to pay for any of the expenses that he is accruing. He doesn’t qualify for any financial assistance, so the family is asking for help.
