This is the time of year when the outside is usually warmer than the inside of your house. If you are like me, the heater does not go on until November. Well, maybe a few times in between to take the chill off, but just for a minute.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Amber Medeiros and Cory Medeiros who celebrated their day Sept. 21, Aidan Nunes, Sept. 22, Ewellen Carlos, Sept. 24, Victor De Souza, Curtis Fournier and Margaret Gordon, who all celebrated Sept. 26, and to Ethan Creato, Brendan Donnelly, Joao Goncalves and Andres Sanchez Roa, who all celebrate their day today Sept. 27.
Congratulations to Alex Morrison and his bride Maggie Brogan who were united in marriage on Sept. 14.
As I have told you before, my father in law Ralph Case was partners with Ed Tyra many moons ago so when I meet up with Ed’s daughter Pat at Stop & Shop we always have something to talk about. She always talks about how she and her brother Gordon and their parents would come over on Sunday night for dinner and to watch TV. They did not have a television so they would come over and watch the Sunday night shows. Pat said she loved coming here because Ralph’s mom would have store-bought cookies like Oreos. Her mom, Helen, always made cookies and they were good, but store-bought cookies were the “bomb.”
Pat filled me in on some things going on in town that I would like to share.
The exhibit One On The Line: The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum until Oct. 26. The exhibit contains photos of several well-known Edgartown fishermen (Clara Brown, Ralph Grant, Ed Tyra, Ralph Case Sr., Howard Andrews, Coop and Lela Gilkes, Alfred Wilde and Ed Jerome, to name a few) with many brief, often funny, fishing stories by them and others. There are some lovely mounted fish on the walls by Janet Messineo and an intriguing derby buttons frame with a fishing painting by Al Wilde. Not all the people in the pictures are identified, so you might be able to help the staff with their names. Pat thinks Maxi Mello is in one and that Warren Norton is the front fisherman in a shore picture. She also liked hearing the stories about Hall of Fame member, Serge de Somov, also known as The Mad Russian. If you do not have time to listen to all the stories, you can listen to the audio clips by dialing in for free to 508-275-9149 and punching in the appropriate guide number followed by the pound (#) key.
A reminder to Edgartown seniors — Wednesday morning fish is free at The Anchors. Thanks go to the derby, the fishermen and women, and the volunteers who fillet the fish. Sign-in for fish distribution starts at 9 a.m. (you will be given a number, just like at the deli); fish distribution starts at 9:30 a.m. Last week the fish choices were bluefish, striped bass and bonito. For those who have never had bonito, you might be surprised at how good it is. Coffee and a snack are provided while you wait.
Andy and Christine Bene from Huntington, N.Y., were here for a few days visiting with cousins Coo and Puppy Cavallo. They were here also to take advantage of the nice September weather and to enjoy some down time from their busy life in New York.
The buzz of the derby is that there was a 19-pound bluefish caught which is now leading the derby. The fish was caught by Daniel Hiemer. Congratulations on catching such a nice fish and also on leading the derby.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
