I was just out on the deck with the dogs and I noticed these little things coming from the sky. I think they were rain drops but they did not stay around long enough for me to figure it out. Also, even though the full moon has gone by, the moon coming up was really beautiful with its orange color shining through. People say stop and smell the roses, well sometimes it just takes looking up in the sky.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Caitlin McHugh who celebrated her day Oct. 19, John Morris on Oct. 20, Hunter Cleary, Michael Johnson and Hawanny Ribeiro, who all celebrated Oct. 21, and to Braylin Hattingh who celebrated her day Oct. 24.

Barbara Magnuson Phillips is home after she and over 60 women spent a week in New Orleans. Barbara, Linda Smith, Faith Benefit and Donna Monteson all traveled south and after watching her postings on Facebook, I see they had a fabulous time. There was lots of café ole, hurricanes and all the delicious food that the south offers. I can’t wait for their next adventure to see what they are up to.

Vineyarders who have memories, experiences or photographs from the Vineyard during World War II are being sought for interviews for a book about WWII on Martha’s Vineyard. In particular, we are interested in speaking with Vineyarders with recollections of the signal corps base on Peaked Hill, the USO, patrolling the beaches, practice invasions, the Katama firing range, the practice bombing on Chappaquiddick, relations between armed forces personnel and Vineyarders and life in general on the Vineyard during the war. All contributions will be appreciated. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is getting in the spirit of Halloween hosting an afternoon festival for families to enjoy on the lawn of the former Marine Hospital/St. Pierre School in Vineyard Haven. The afternoon will feature contests, historic games, carvings, costumes, food, cider and more.

The public is invited to bring their already carved pumpkins to the festival to be displayed for the duration of the event. Judges will choose the best carved pumpkin and Halloween costume in two categories, kids and adults, and prizes will be awarded in all categories. Judges include Susan Klein, Island author and storyteller, Ann Smith, Executive Director at Featherstone Center for the Arts, and Dr. Jim Weiss, Superintendent of the Vineyard schools.

In addition to the contests, families are invited to play with some of the Museum’s historic games on the lawn, interact with alpaca from the Island Alpaca Farm, and admire other’s carved pumpkins and costumes. Cronig’s will provide cider and Halloween treats will be available for everyone.

Speaking of Halloween, the stores in downtown Edgartown will have candy for trick or treaters from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Halloween is Thursday night so if you are out and about, keep your eyes open for ghosts and goblins.
