The Vineyard varsity boys’ soccer team closed out the regular season in similar fashion to the way they started it — by shutting out a challenging opponent.
And with the 3-0 defeat of Dennis-Yarmouth on Wednesday, the team also sealed an undefeated record. The Vineyarders are 15-0-2 on the season, and a perfect 8-0-0 in the Eastern Athletic Conference.
The team has not allowed a goal since Oct. 8, and the formidable defense has allowed just four goals all season. Head coach Damon Burke also underscored the Vineyard offense, noting that they have not trailed an opponent at all this season.
During Wednesday’s game against D-Y, junior cocaptain Lee Faraca scored on an assist from senior cocaptain Sam Entner, and sophomore Jason Lages scored two goals to bring his season total to 19. Senior cocaptain Kane Araujo and junior Noah Kleinhenz assisted on Lages’s goals.
Last week, the team took on Bishop Feehan in the final Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season, earning a 1-0 win. Lages and Kleinhenz connected for the score.
High school athletic director Mark McCarthy said he expected seedings for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association postseason tournament to be announced late next week.
In other sports news, the varsity Vineyard golf team shot a combined 316 to win the MIAA division three south tournament, held Monday in Dennis. With the win, the team advanced to the division three state tournament, to be held Monday in Great Barrington. The top 12 teams in division three play in the state tournament. The Vineyarders finished their regular season with an 8-7-1 record.
Sophomore golfer Ben Lukowitz shot a 75 to win a co-medalist trophy during the south section tournament, tying with Nantucket’s Marshall Shaffar-Roggeveen Senior cocaptains Matt Marchand shot 79 and 80, respectively, during Monday’s tournament. Freshmen Finn Simpkins and Zak Danz each shot 82, and sophomore Kaitlyn Marchand finished with a score of 90.
The girls’ soccer team finished their season Wednesday with a 0-0 tie against Dennis-Yarmouth at home. The Vineyarders closed out the fall with a 4-8-3 record.
Field hockey, playing a tough season-ending schedule of six straight away games, fell 2-0 in their final contest to Falmouth on Monday. The team finishes with a 7-9-2 record.
