Well, yes, my column was available last week but due to the stress and strains of holiday publishing, it was only viewable on line, not in your old-fashioned newspaper. I didn’t even know how to find it. Unfortunately, I am used to making mistakes. Fortunately, this one wasn’t mine!
So onward we go with our new resolutions and plans, many of which will involve a lighter diet once this holiday spread is off the tables. I am very pleased and thankful for all my wonderful gifts, particularly the edible ones, but what happened to the fruitcake? I have noticed in the past few years no one seems to send fruitcake anymore. Did Johnny Carson’s relentless joke about the one fruitcake that went ‘round the world finally make an impression? Does anyone still make it? Does anyone know how? Inquiring minds want to know.
A very happy new year to all our friends at Cumberland Farms (Cumby’s) and thanks for the free coffee on Christmas day. These folks and their customers are like family to me.
This is always the time of year when we reflect on who we’ve lost. Our library is presenting a big reminder on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. in the program room. Peter O’Toole (be still, my heart) will be seen in all his glory with the equally glorious Katharine Hepburn. You know the film. I’ll see you there.
The Federated Church in Edgartown presents its off-season free lasagna luncheons beginning this coming Sunday and continuing through March. All are welcome to stop in at the parish hall between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. for lasagna, salad, garlic bread and cookies. Meals are free and no donations are accepted. I’ll see you there.
Don’t forget your friends and your friends’ parents and relatives living at Windemere. This is a great time of year to visit and bring some cheer. Tour the amazing art collection at the hospital while you are there.
A big happy new year shout out to Gloria Eaton, seasonal Island resident, who was kind enough to call on Christmas Eve and wish Teri, Nonna and me a very happy holiday. Perhaps the best gift Teri and I received was that Nonna sat at the piano and played Christmas carols and Christmas songs. The church organist has not lost her touch or her voice.
Belated birthday bouquets go out to Eleanor Cohen, my dear friend who turned 102 on Dec. 31. Eleanor and I used to excitedly discuss books and grandchildren. Eleanor continued teaching yoga into her 90s.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Donna Tankard today. Tomorrow is shared by Barsha Tolin and Helena Nivala. January 5 is for Jimmy Bishop, Angela Murphy and Anthony Iammarino. On Jan. 7, Jamie Amaral celebrates and Jan. 8 smiles on Marvin Rosenkrantz and Sonya Mayrand. And on Jan. 9, Amamda Star Kieffer, Lou Jannace and Tarny Levett take the cake. Many happy returns.
