Richard (Dick) E. Quimby of Martha’s Vineyard and New Hampshire died suddenly at his home in Palm Bay, Fla., on Jan. 16. He was 77.
Dick was born in Manchester, N.H., on Jan. 14, 1937 to the late Eugene and Doris (Shirley) Quimby.
He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and received his associate degree at Nashua Vocational Technical School of New Hampshire. He worked for many years at Sanders/BAE and retired from Parker Pneutronics of Hollis, N.H. He was an Air Force reservist who was called to duty during the Cuban missile crisis.
Dick also spent many years bringing his sons, family and friends hiking, camping and skiing. He loved the outdoors, hiking trails and the mountains. He had camped in Acadia, along the California Shore and all the national parks in between. He climbed all the 4,000-footers in the White Mountains and volunteered for over 35 years for the Appalachian Mountains Club, working in the mountain huts with his dear friend Jack.
He will be truly missed by his family, friends and co-workers.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Pamela; his son Gregory Quimby, his two children, Madeline and Jackquiline, his wife Jennifer St. Pierre and her two children, Jacob and Kylie; son Russell Quimby, his wife Nicole Frasier and their two children, Maya and Marin; and son Christopher Quimby and his wife Krystina Quimby. He will also be truly missed by his much-loved sisters and brothers in law Sandra and Frederick Cournoyer and Marsha and Leo Gagnon, and his extended family of nieces, nephews and longtime friends.
A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 20, in Palm Bay, Fla. His ashes will be placed beside his mother and father’s grave in Manchester, N.H., and in Pamela’s family plot on Martha’s Vineyard, where someday Pam’s remains will come to rest. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
Donations can be made to Appalachian Mountain Club, 5 Joy street, Boston, MA 02108.
