The Edgartown and Oak Bluffs police departments invite the Vineyard community to participate in an upcoming Citizens Police Academy. The program will allow citizens to learn about and observe the workings of their police departments. Participants will be instructed by members of the departments in a variety of subjects that will be taught in various settings. Classes will include hands-on experience. The police department said the key to the success of this program is the enthusiasm and participation that the citizens bring to it.
The Citizens Police Academy will be held at the Edgartown or Oak Bluffs police departments once a week for 12 weeks. Sessions will take place on Wednesdays beginning March 19 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Some classes will be held at other locations. Each student will participate in a ride-along with an officer during their patrol. In order for students to graduate, they must not miss more than two classes.
Application packets are available at the Edgartown and Oak Bluffs police stations or at the departments’ websites.
