The signs are clear — summer season is drawing near not only because ice cream stores have thrown open their doors, but also because Memorial Day weekend marks the opening of most art galleries across the Island. Artists have busied themselves all winter with the creative process and now they’re ready to share.
The Martha’s Vineyard Arts Association has been open all week and offers a membership group show this weekend, Reflections: Celebrating Our MVAA Heritage, at the Old Sculpin Gallery on Dock street in Edgartown. It’s the association’s 60th anniversary and the summer will be filled with special events in honor of the occasion. Painting the Vineyard, a collaboration with the Preservation Trust, is planned for July 15 to 19, when plein air artists will set up easels outdoors around the Vineyard. A reception of the works created takes place on Sunday, July 20, this summer.
Alison Shaw’s gallery on Dukes County avenue in the Arts District in Oak Bluffs opens with all new works this weekend. Her summer includes two Arts District Strolls — one in July and another in August. Besides the neighborhood art parties, the Alison Shaw Gallery hosts book signings for two cookbooks over the summer before starting up the many photography-related workshops Ms. Shaw will offer beginning in late summer.
North Water Gallery in Edgartown is hosting a painting demonstration by Brandon Newton from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The Louisa Gould Gallery on Main street in Vineyard Haven begins the season with its Sail Into Summer annual group show with the opening reception on Saturday, May 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. Featured artists presenting more than 80 new works include Doug Kent, Adam Thompson, Frauke Klatt, Donna Blackburn, Laura Roberts, Christie Scheele, Leslie S. Self, Nick Paciorek and Nancy Furino. Ms. Gould will offer exhibits all summer, highlighting bursts of color and natural land and seascapes. She winds up the season with an exhibit of photographs from around the world in mid-September.
The courtyard at the Eisenhauer Gallery on North Water street in Edgartown comes alive with music and art during the summer. There will be a Memorial Day Solo Exhibition featuring artist Cheri Christensen at the gallery on Saturday, May 24, with music by Johnny Hoy from 6 to 8 p.m. Music will accompany art openings on nearly every Thursday with works from artists such as Stephanie Danforth, Jylian Gustlin, Rebecca Kinkead, James Zwadlo, Fred Calleri, Michel Brosseau and Santiago Garcia taking center stage at the gallery.
