Aquinnah Public Library will present Phil Weinstein, the Alexander Griswold Cummins Professor of English at Swarthmore College, who will speak on Thursday, July 24, at 5 p.m. at the Aquinnah town hall. His discussion will feature Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s 100 Years of Solitude. The library staff reminds us that “Phil is an amazing speaker and intellect as most of you know, and his talks are always wonderful.”

The Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group invites everyone to its first annual benefit art show, with the opening this evening at the Tashmoo Spring Building in Tisbury from 5 to 8 p.m. Stop by to enjoy art and oysters. The works of more than 30 artists will be on display, with shellfish and local waters the theme of most of the art. The show will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as well. Half of all the sales will benefit the MVSG to produce oyster, scallop and quahog seed to stock our ponds and to clean our waters across the Vineyard.

The annual Feast of the Holy Ghost will be held at the Portuguese-American Club on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, with traditional foods, games, music and an auction. The parade will be on Sunday morning from the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority dock to Circuit avenue, over to Vineyard avenue and to the Portuguese-American Club. A very important weekend, steeped in culture and tradition.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services will present the 36th annual Art Buchwald Possible Dreams Auction on Sunday, July 27, from 5 to 7 p.m., for the live auction, gates open at 3:45 p.m. at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Edgartown, with auctioneer Jimmy Tingle. There will also be a silent auction, raffle tickets and door prizes. Tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased online at mvcommunityservices.com/possibledreams. Dinner tickets are $225 each for dinner at the Lure Grill. MV Community Services provides services for more than 6,000 Vineyarders every year.

Get well wishes to Adriana Giles Ignacio who is recuperating at Massachusetts General Hospital where she was transferred from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital after an unfortunate fall. As of Wednesday, she was still in the intensive care unit and is not able to receive calls, cards or visitors until next week. Healing thoughts and prayers for Adriana.

All the best to Michael Gilman who has headed to Florida to care for his father, George Gilman. Michael will be missed at WMVY where he has enjoyed his job over the past few years.

Joan LeLacheur will host an open studio on Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 42 Old South Road in Aquinnah. Congratulations to Beatrice Whiting and Patrick Ruel on the birth of their son Asa Allen Ruel who was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on July 10.

Carl Widdiss is still undergoing his treatments in Phoenix, Arizona. The amazing response from his family and friends in their raising funds for his medical care has been very encouraging for Carl. It allows him to focus on his health and in getting stronger each day.

Aquinnah town administrator Adam Wilson traveled to Boston on June 26 to present the flag of the town of Aquinnah for the Hall of Flags. It was anticipated that each town and city across the commonwealth would participate in submitting their flags. Adam was greeted by Sen. Dan Wolf and Rep. Tim Madden.

Aquinnah police officer Steve Mathias will celebrate on July 22 and shares the day with Oona Buresch Carroll and her mother Kendra Buresch, and Charlene Alley. Sheila Arno Jason will party on July 23. Captain Hugh Taylor will party on July 24 and shares the day with Lisa Pachico. Samuel Scott, Berta Welch and Corey Vanderhoop share the day on July 25.
