Dr. Carey Rosenthal, beloved husband and father, died Wednesday, July 30. He was 71.
Carey graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1960 as valedictorian. He went on to attend Cornell University where he studied mathematics and again graduated as valedictorian in 1960. Carey received a masters and PhD in chemical physics at Harvard as a Woodrow Wilson Scholar.
Carey taught for over 40 years at Drexel University as a chemistry professor. During his sabbatical from Drexel, Carey researched as a Princeton University Fellow, during which time he and Herschel Rabitz published Quantum Optimally Controlled Transition Landscapes in Science.
As a young adult, Carey was featured as clarinet soloist in the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra’s concert, playing Mozart’s famous Clarinet Concerto. His love for classical music continued throughout his life. He played the clarinet for numerous years in the Vineyard Haven Band, recently with his daughter, Brin, who played the flute alongside him. Carey also studied as a piano student at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music for 20 years.
Carey ran the Boston Marathon in 1980 and constructed his own post and beam home on Martha’s Vineyard in the early 1970s.
Carey and Abby recently celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary. Brin, a Princeton PhD physics student, is following in Carey’s footsteps. Blake recently graduated from Harvard this past May, a happy event that Carey was delighted to attend.
Carey was survived by his wife Abby, two daughters, Brin and Blake, and his sister Sara.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Carey’s name can be made to the Vineyard Haven Band, P.O. Box 2187, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
