Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Walter E. Delaney who passed away peacefully at his home in Arlington on August 26 with the presence and love of his daughter Gayle Delaney Dineen by his side. Walter was our former Aquinnah fire chief/selectman/moderator and wore many other hats in his time while serving the town of Aquinnah.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Laura L. Reid who passed away at her Chilmark home on August 18. There will be a memorial service for Laura at the Grange on Saturday, August 30, at 1 p.m. Laura’s medical career spanned more than two decades on the Vineyard.
For those reading my column online, there will be a karaoke/sing along at the Chilmark Community Center on Thursday, August 28, from 7 to 10 p.m. for the benefit of the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living. Tickets are $10 at the door; BYOB and light refreshments. Bring your musical instruments and join in the fun.
The Aquinnah Public Library presents the Summer Readers Pizza Party on Saturday, August 30, at noon. The pizzas will be created with all of the “stuff” grown in the summer pizza garden.
Tours will be held at the Edwin Devries Vanderhoop Homestead, a restored 19th-century farmhouse near the cliffs. Tours, new exhibits, special events and speakers provide Aquinnah Wampanoag history and culture. New exhibits include Wampanoag whaling in the 18th and 19th centuries; a beginning exhibit on the lighthouse and the Wampanoag people who kept it, and a new video program, Land and Life in Old Gay Head. House tours will be held on Friday, August 29, on Saturday, August 30, and on Wednesday, September 3, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
Aquinnah artist Roberta Gross will have an opening on Saturday evening August 30 at 5 p.m. at the Louisa Gould Gallery at 54 Main street in Tisbury, for the 7th annual abstract art exhibit titled Abstract Vision: The Colors and Forms Behind the Everyday. The show contains the work of nine artists, including their mixed media paintings, encaustic pieces and photography. In addition to curating the show, Roberta will have several works on display. On Sept. 5 at 5 p.m., she will give a curator’s gallery talk.
You’ll find me at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum for the weekend, as Moore and Moore and Moore opens this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum gallery, curated by museum director David Nathans. Enjoy the work of the late Nelson Augustus Moore, his great-great grandson Andrew Gordon Moore and his daughter Hannah Moore of Harthaven. On Saturday, it will be Archaeology ID Day at the museum from 9 a.m. to noon. Feel free to bring in your artifacts to be identified by archaelogists Jim Richardson and Jim Tuck.
On Saturday evening, The Graduate will be playing at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society with a question and answer time with director/producer Mike Nichols. I am still trying to secure tickets to that one.
The Tisbury Firefighters Association will hold its annual car show on Sunday, August 31, in Tisbury. This year they are dedicating the event to the memory of Ricky Vanderhoop — a big car buff.
Joan LeLacheur will have an open studio on Saturday, August 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 42 Old South Road in Aquinnah. She will display her wampum beads and jewelry for men, women and children — keepsakes of beautiful shell. For information, please call Joan at 508-645-9954.
