So the fair came and went in beautiful weather. Do you remember those awful past days when the fair was only three days long? I’m sure you and your house guests have nothing bad to say about the meteorology this week. Pray it lasts. An early Labor Day needs to be celebrated this Monday, then back to school next Wednesday and Thursday. Another season slips by.
The last Legion lobster rolls were served Tuesday night. Many thanks to the hard-working crews who fed and entertained us. The first Legion Auxiliary meeting of the new season will be held at the hall on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. I’ll see you there.
I cannot even think of the Legion without thinking of Ed Colligan. Pass the word that we will celebrate Ed’s life on Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning with a mass at St. Augustine’s. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Vineyard Haven. After that, where else could we fit all of Ed’s friends but the Ag Hall? Granddaughter Jenny is organizing and asking for any photos, stories, or memories. Please send them as soon as possible to Tom_Colligan@yahoo.com. Surely this will be the send off of all time for a man of all seasons.
Our Vineyard Haven Public Library will be holding it’s annual fun run/walk on Sept. 14, and you can sign up now at vhlibrary.org.
Professor Philip Weinstein of Swarthmore College is ready to begin a free six-week course on Tolstoy’s modern epic, War and Peace. The series will take place at 7 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Sept. 17, Oct. 1, Oct. 15, Oct. 29, Nov. 12 and end on Dec. 3. The library has reserved several copies for you as there is homework in advance. The librarians can also help you order more copies on Clams. Mr. Weinstein suggests you read Volume One, Parts One and Two. We request that you register in advance online or at the library. Ready, set, study!
Confidential to Lyn K: Nonna has whipped through a lot of books this week; a collection on Uncle Frank Sinatra, A Drinking Life by Pete Hamill, and is now deep in Dick Wolf’s The Execution. I am reading whatever is the nearest book or magazine to me at beddy-bye time. Last night it was this week’s New Yorker about the horrible GMOs in our food. I guess War and Peace is next on our reading list.
Anita Cimeno is expecting her daughter, Nancy Cimeno Applebaum, for a week’s visit. Nancy has recently moved from Boca Raton, (lovely) to Georgia (even lovelier). She will be here to spend quality time with Anita, her brothers and sisters, and all her friends she grew up with. Welcome back, Nancy!
A big thank you and bunch of flowers go out to Kara Best and her son Christian who helped so much by shopping for me when I was not feeling well. You two are the best!
Anniversary bouquets go out to Ed Mossey and Clare Ann Harrington on August 30. Ralph Graves and his bride Mareda Gaither-Graves celebrate many years of wedded bliss on Sept. 1.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Marck Baline today. August 30 is a party for Laura Lee Honey (the name is as beautiful as she is), Monique Cormier, a rising star, and lovely Greta Kotova. August 31 honors Van Morrison, Jessica Dolliver, Tanita Macy and Jim Pringle Jr. Sept. 1 is shared by Crystal Ewart and Rey Garza. Rey is my son’s most amazing father in law. On Sept. 2 twins Brandon and Lindsay Smith share the day with Joan Beattie. On Sept. 3 Tessa Grant, Judy Bitgood, Seth Gambino, Stuart Bangs, Christine Geddis, Gabrielle Jobert and Leigh Anne Searle age gracefully. And on Sept. 4th Chelsea Leigh Mercier and Tyler Mast take the cake. Many happy returns.
