Veterans, merchant mariners and others involved in past and present service will be recognized at the 16th annual service honoring veterans at the Shabbat service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Friday, Nov. 14. Rabbi Caryn Broitman will lead the Shabbat service starting at 5:30 p.m. Jo Ann Murphy, veterans agent for Dukes County, will attend and be available to answer any veteran-related questions. Officers and members of American Legion Post 249 in Vineyard Haven will participate in the service.

Thomas Dresser, Herb Foster and Jay Schofield will present a summary of their book Martha’s Vineyard in World War II, followed by Lt. Col. David Berube, Wing Chaplain, 102nd Intelligence Wing, Massachusetts Air National Guard reading President Roosevelt’s June 6, 1944, D-day prayer. The service will close with former Master Chief Musician USN Ed Rodgers playing taps.

Yahrzeit (memorial) candles will be lighted to pay homage to veterans. In addition, those gathered may read a favorite appropriate piece to memorialize a loved one or friend who has served or is currently serving. An Oneg Shabbat with light refreshments will follow.
