Judy Jones (Banker) Gordon died on Dec. 20, 2014, at her residence on Sea Island, Ga. She was 73. Her husband, Kenneth, preceded Judy in death.
Born and raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Judy graduated from Hathaway Brown School in Cleveland. She loved and excelled at the game of golf and was mentored by Henry Picard from her teens until he died in 1997. She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where she played on the men’s golf team.
Following graduation from Rollins, she married Jay C. Banker and lived first in Newport, R.I., and New London, Conn., before returning to Cleveland and then moving to Philadelphia in 1964 and to Albany, N.Y., in 1968. She won golf championships at Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia and Schuyler Meadows in Albany.
In 1977, Judy moved to Sea Island, which she said was the best decision of her life. On Sea Island, she and Ken enjoyed many rounds of golf and both won the Sea Island Golf Championship in the same year. Judy later joined Ocean Forest, where she also won various club championships.
She began her real estate career in 1981 with Sea Palms Coastal Realty. Several years later, Merrill Lynch recruited her as a wealth management advisor. Ultimately, she decided selling real estate was more fun and returned to Sea Palms. In 1997, Judy joined Sea Island Properties, where she was often the top in sales in Glynn County. She was a deal maker and could put two ends of a deal together.
Judy was upbeat and had an infectious laugh. She was also a competitor driven to be the best at everything she did. She was certainly a high-energy person who had two speeds, full throttle or sleeping. She could pack more into a day than most would in a week, never wasting a minute. In more recent years, Judy developed a passion for both duplicate and social bridge. She made numerous friends through the game of bridge and belonged to the ACDL and Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club, where she accumulated many master points and was a sought after partner. Her vim and vitality was admired and will be missed.
In the last year of her life, Judy slowed down as she valiantly fought against cancer. Her constant companion for the last five years was Bob Stein, whom we love and appreciate for his devotion to her. The family would like to thank Kim Chi Gates, Hospice of the Golden Isles and all the other caregivers and friends for assisting us with her care in the last few months of her life.
She is survived by her sons Michael Jay Banker and wife Jennifer, and Douglas Kipp Banker and wife Hallie; two other children, Gregory and Philip, died in infancy. Known affectionately by her grandchildren as JG, Judy is survived by her grandchildren, Caroline, Harrison and Nicholas, and also by three stepchildren, Suzanne Gordon, Pamela DuPont and Kenneth J. Gordon. Her brother, Robert N. Jones and wife Midge, also survive her along with six nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Ocean Forest Golf Club on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 3 p.m. A reception to celebrate Judy’s life will follow.
