Skiers have a saying, “Skiing is a dance and the mountains always lead.” Bella Thorpe had the pleasure of dancing with Telluride, Colo., this past week. What fun she had skiing the Rockies with her dad Bart Thorpe, Laurie David, Jill, Oscar and Kate Hansen.

The Abrams/Benjamin crew, Pinto, Jess, Silas and Axel, sought out some powder, too, venturing north to Sunday River, Me. They met up with friends including Jill, Jason, Stella, Cam and Leo Napior and Erika, Sean, Willa, Josie and Beatrice Welch. Undoubtedly, fun was had by all.

Susan and Joe Chapman, along with son Cooper who is a freshman at Tampa’s St. Leo University, have returned to their Flanders Lane home after some adventure time in Ireland. Daughter Hadley who is studying abroad at Lycée International de Saint Germain en Laye, an international high school in France, joined her family for the holidays. Hadley has been enjoying her time completely immersed in the French culture. Cooper will return to university and lace up his lacrosse cleats.

Gabe Ambulos, son of Mary (Kuh) and Perry Gabriel, and his CSU under 15 team swept their division at the HD Jamboree held at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, N.H. Not only did his team win three out of three games but they also did not allow a single goal to be scored. That’s certainly true talent being shown right there.

The Bennett family, consisting of Aaron, Sarah (Slater), Jack and Scott, visited at Grandma Jane Slater’s Basin Road home. They took sweet pup Lucy out for drives and beach romps, dined out at Offshore Ale, and had an all around pleasant visit.

Young Asa Ruel, infant son of Patrick and Bea Whiting, has had his first play date with his new cousin Prudence Ruya Whiting. She is the beautiful baby girl of Will and Ozge born on Dec. 20.

Lucky me, I had a shout-out from Hal Noyes of Steamboat Springs, Colo. It’s always nice hearing from the grandfather of Adelaide, Thea, Ella and Lathrop Keene because everything he has to say is always so positive and inspiring.

A couple of months ago, Jenna Zechner, whom many of you know as Cody Coutinho’s girlfriend, was accepted to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She graduated from Merrimack College this past spring and now will embark on another educational journey. She will be studying at the Manchester, N.H., campus. Jenna will be missed at the Coutinhos’ Quansoo home, but I’m guessing she will be most welcomed for visits, vacations and weekends.

Welcome to the world Sloane Elizabeth Rossi. The lovely little lady was born to Ellen (O’Donoghue) and Ryan on Jan. 5. Proud grandparents Jane and Dan Rossi will certainly dote on their first grandchild.

It’s that time of year again; roll out the red carpet for Free Friday Films at the Chilmark library. Friday night at 7 p.m. the series will kick off with a local favorite gone viral — Jaws. I think you all likely know the storyline so I won’t bother with a brief synopsis. Popcorn and juice will be served as you sit back and keep your eyes peeled for, albeit younger, familiar faces including Julie Flanders, Fran Flanders, Beth Campbell, Chris Fielder, and Jini, Joan and Donald Poole. This year’s winter movies series, running through mid March, revolves around a water theme. Can you guess what some of those classics might be?

Also happening at the library is a lunchtime showing of The Best Years of Our Lives — a 1946 Academy Award-winning film starring Myrna Loy. Chowder & a Movie at noon on Jan. 14 should prove to be a great break from the wintery mix Mother Nature has provided.

Nancy Aronie will host a short session of her Chilmark Writing Workshop geared towards those of us who work long hours in the summer, have kiddos at home that we can’t bear to be away from all week or just those of us who simply don’t have the cash to sink into a full session. The group will gather Friday night, Jan. 23, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For $199, Nancy will provide you with safety, warmth, a desire to write and delicious soup for lunch. Looking for a fun evening out? Janis Syslo and Merrily Fenner, along with the rest of their Serendipity band members, will be cranking up the tunes at the Portuguese-American Club Friday night from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

I realize it is a couple of weeks away but I thought I would share the information now so you will be sure to mark your calendars and line up your childcare providers. On Jan. 24, the Chilmark School PTO will host it’s biggest fundraising event of the year. For $20, you will gain entry to the Red Hot Blues Bash with Mike Benjamin at the Chilmark Community Center. From 7 to 11 p.m. you can dance, socialize and bid on both live and silent auction items. Tickets for the event are available online at TicketsMV.com and through all school parents. Hit up Susan Goldsmith, Molly Glasgow, Patricia Bacon, Noni Smith, Hillary Noyes-Keene or any other parent you can grab a hold of. It surely will be a fun evening for all.
