Aquinnah endured another blizzard over the weekend with temperatures dipping to dangerous levels at 20 degrees below zero with the wind chill factor. Winds gusted up to more than 60 mph. White-out conditions made travel perilous. At least the children will have a great week of sledding and skating during their school vacation. Thank you to Jason Baird for plowing our driveway, where the drift forms from the bareness of the front lawn. Thank you again to all of the essential emergency staff covering each and every town for everyone’s safety.

It has been a few years but ice boating and ice windsurfing are back on Squibnocket Pond. For a while everyone was concerned about global warming but that is not the case this winter. The Carroll family has been ice boating across Job’s Pond. We had a whole generation of children who never experienced sledding or ice skating on the ponds and now the sports have made a come back with the temperatures we have been experiencing. It has been quite a few years since Vineyard Haven harbor has had such a large amount of ice. Menemsha harbor ice was broken up by a U.S. Coast Guard Cutter on Tuesday. Spring is just four weeks away!

Speaking of spring — you will have an opportunity to view the baby lambs at the Farm Institute in Katama. The young children would enjoy viewing them while on vacation. They may be seen on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 2:45 and 3:30 p.m.

Saturday at the Aquinnah Public Library there will be a Lego party at noon to celebrate the beginning of school vacation week. Build your most favorite Lego creation while sipping hot cocoa. On Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m., stop by to make a photo album. Pull your photographs out of the boxes and bins and find empty albums. Bring a potluck dish to share and just hang out while organizing your photographs.

Janette Vanderhoop will teach yoga on Sundays at Aquinnah town hall. Classes are free and open to Aquinnah residents from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Bring your own mat if you have one.

ACE-MV and Northeastern University will offer classes on sustainability. The classes will run between March 7 and April 11. Scholarships are available. Please register online at acemv.org or call Lynn at 508-693-9222.

Pecha Kucha will be presented Friday night by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum at the Harbor View Hotel in the Menemsha room at 7:30 p.m. It involves a simple presentation of 20 images for seconds each in a variety of topics. Always fun and of interest to all, there is free admission and food and beverages are available for purchase in the restaurant.

During school vacation next week, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will entertain children ages five to 12 with tie dye of totes and tees for a small fee. For reservations, please call Katy at 508-627-4441 extension 123.

It was good to see Tom and Christine Murphy out and about enjoying their first winter in Aquinnah and stocking up for the weekend weather.
