Island conservation organizations will be conducting prescribed burns this spring on three different pieces of conservation land.
The Nature Conservancy announced last week that it will conduct two prescribed burns in Edgartown, one at the Katama Airfield and another on conservation-restricted property on Meeting House Way. The burns will take place between March 31 and May 31.
The Trustees of Reservations has announced that they will conduct a prescribed burn at Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury between March 31 and June 30.
The Nature Conservancy and the Trustees coordinate the prescribed burns with Northeast Forest and Fire Management LLC, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Bureau of Fire Control, The Trustees of Reservations and Mass Audubon. The Vineyard sandplain has a long history of frequent fires, which helped shape the habitat, and fire suppression can interrupt that ecology and threaten wildlife that has adapted to frequent fires.
