It looks like a scene from My Fair Lady in the cat room at the animal shelter these days. The majority of the residents are black and white tuxedos. The newest member of the crew is Duncan, who came to the shelter as a stray from Aquinnah. He is very mellow and loves to be cuddled, so we assume that he was a house pet at one time. Mickey, a six-year-old neutered male can be found playing with Tui, also neutered and an inside cat. Then we have a lovely lady with a long lustrous coat, very chic in those classic neutrals. Her name is Logo. Just for contrast, there is also a gray tabby named Winslow and an ancient calico called Cricket.
The shelter is frequently a way station for a dog. Such was the case with Happy, a handsome American bulldog. He had his third birthday last week and got the best present of all, a new home with a loving owner. Desirable dogs like him get a quick turnaround here.
Let’s hope Mama Nature keeps putting out the string of warm days we are enjoying as I write this. We need this weather to continue through Saturday when we hope many dogs clad in pink and green show up at the mini park on Main street in Edgartown for the dog show to celebrate Pink and Green weekend. Come to the lighthouse in the center of the park to show off your pet’s finery between noon and 1 p.m. to receive a dog biscuit and a ribbon.
Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662. Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown, MA 02539 or visit animalshelterofmv.org.
