The women in history through theatre program led by Phyllis Vecchia just completed its fifth year at the Tisbury School and the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School.
Students re-enacted the life of Mary Chipman Lawrence, a whaling wife from Falmouth, the Salem witchcraft trials, Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Suffragists. The women of Salem portion spoke of the courage of those who died at the trials, and how they would rather lose their lives than be excommunicated from their church.
The Harriet Beecher Stowe piece re-enacted the author’s courage in speaking out against slavery through her book Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
In total, 31 classes were taught by Ms. Vecchia, with support from Whitney Burke, Emily Levett, Jennifer Parkinson and Haley Panek.
The program is paid for by the town of Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank Charitable Fund, private funding and donors. For more information, call Phyllis Vecchia at 508-696-8728.
