Martha’s Vineyard male and female track athletes traveled to New Bedford and Somerville last Saturday for a Coaches Invitational meet. In the boys competition Vineyarder Aivaras Gedvilas set a personal record for the 1-mile event at the Greater New Bedford Regional, logging a time of 4:41.67, to place 10th in an elite field of runners.
The Vineyard girls competed at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, where standout Olivia Smith also set a personal record in the 100 meter hurdles. She finished in 16.21, after side stepping a fellow competitor who had fallen in her way. Smith also set a new long jump record for the school, which now stands at 17’5, to place fifth overall. Smith set a third record, also for the school, as part of a 4 X 100 relay team with Juniper Ezanno, Madison Moreis and Natalija Lakis. They finished in 52.17 to break a school record that had stood since 2007.
Rose Engler and Pearl Vercruysse also competed at the event, in the mile race, turning in both of their best times this year at 5:37 and 5:39 respectively.
