Uber, the smart phone-based ride sharing service, has announced its official launch on Martha’s Vineyard.
According to a press release from the company, UberX, the company’s “low-cost ride sharing option” is available on the Vineyard and other “beach towns across the East Coast” as of 5 p.m. on May 22.
Uber rides have already been available on the Vineyard for the past few weeks.
The company said the Vineyard cost for an UberX ride is a $2.50 base fare plus 25 cents per minute and $1.90 per mile.
When Uber announced in late April that it was exploring Vineyard service, local cab companies expressed concern about the impact to their business. Some towns are also looking at how to regulate Uber. West Tisbury town counsel found that current taxi regulations do not apply to the ride sharing company, while this week, Edgartown town officials said they are looking at drafting new taxi regulations that will include Uber.
