Barbara Kopple’s film, Harlan County USA, won the Academy Award for best documentary in 1976. It also earned her a place, right at the beginning of her career, in the history books with one of the greatest documentaries of all time.

Harlan County documented the Kentucky coal miner strike against the Duke Power Company. Four years later, Ms. Kopple won another Academy Award for her film about the Hormel Foods strike in Minnesota. During her career, Ms. Kopple has made over 20 films, ranging in subjects from Woody Allen’s music to boxer Mike Tyson.

Her latest film is an account of the long history of The Nation Magazine and it will be shown Wednesday, July 15, at the Chilmark Community Center as part of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival. Ms. Kopple will be in attendance to answer questions about this film in particular and her career.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with dinner and music on the grounds of the center. The movie screens at 7:30 p.m.
