The town of Edgartown will receiving funding to restore Fuller Street Beach as part of a state grant program to address the effects of climate change and coastal storms.
Gov. Charlie Baker announced more than $2.2 million in state grants last week that will go to 16 projects in the eastern part of the commonwealth. The grants are provided by the Office of Coastal Zone Management as part of a program to increase awareness about the impact of climate change and to support projects that protect infrastructure, coastal shoreline habitats and natural resources.
Edgartown will receive $62,250 for beach nourishment and dune restoration for Fuller Street Beach, Lighthouse Beach and Lighthouse Pond. The work will “restore habitat, improve the natural function of the barrier beach and provide recreational benefits to the town.”
Edgartown conservation agent Jane Varkonda said Thursday that the state funding will go toward a larger project in the works by the town to restore Fuller Street Beach, which has eroded in recent years.
"We have a fairly good sized project planned," she said, adding that the project includes the creation of dunes and beach nourishment from Fuller Street Beach all the way to the lighthouse.
The state funding will go toward the cost of securing the rest of the permitting, Ms. Varkonda said, and the goal is to complete the project in the next year.
