October’s seasonal weather has been spring cool, summer hot and for a couple of evenings almost fireside winter cold. The colors have come out, making a trip down east unnecessary. The skinny squirrels suggest a mild winter, defying the Farmer’s Almanac’s dire predictions. Let’s hope the squirrels are correct. I’m pretty sure I’ve had my last outside shower until next spring, though.

Niantic Park’s basketball courts will be purple and white and the playground will have a brand-new ground surface by the time the whole park is open next season. The fire safety building has all of its red doors hung and new parking lots ready for fire engines, ambulances and the equipment needed to ensure our safety. The office part of the new structure might have looked better at the back.

There is a Halloween party at the Oak Bluffs library Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, with Scrabble and chess concurrently. The library plans a drive-in movie for kids on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. People will create and decorate cardboard cars to “drive in” and watch a movie. The event is open to all ages. Turkey Day at the library is Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. Make turkey puppets, play turkey games and more. The library will be closed on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day and on Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving.

Tricia Bergeron and the Portuguese American Club will receive the 2015 Spirit of the Vineyard Award from Vineyard Village at Home on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. The award is given to a person or organization whose work has made a difference to the community. The criteria for selection include selflessness, the range and depth of service and the effect on the quality of life of those who received help and for the Island community as a whole.

Many Oak Bluffs people besides my wife Karen and oldest, Kharma, have October birthdays. I hope it was the happiest ever for Gretchen Underwood, Rich Walker, Barbara Alleyne, Brenda Slaughter, Ronnie Mechur, Anne and Sydney Stewart, Kym Washington-Longino, and Quinn Rhone. And a special salute to the late Senator Edward W. Brooke who was born Oct. 26, 1919, 96 years ago this past Monday.

Happy Halloween Saturday; guess what my costume is?

I least like waking up and coming home in the dark. Turn your clock back Sunday and enjoy fall while it lasts. If you have news or information to share you can e-mail me.

Keep your foot on a rock.
