Here we are in the middle of January and we are looking at our first snow storm of the winter coming up the coast. The wind and bitter cold has arrived and we seem to be taking a little longer to get used to it as the weather has been so great up till now. I have seen pictures on Facebook with kids sledding on just patches of snow. But at least they are outside. But we will see what the weekend brings.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Elias Gunderson and James Murray, who celebrated their day Jan. 16; Gabryal Brooks, Jan. 17; William Thornton, Jan. 18; Neveaha Jackson, Jan. 19; Kayo De Oliveira, Dylan Mahoney, Jan. 20; and to Rita Hurley who celebrates her day today, Jan. 22.

On Jan. 27, Jan and Floyd Norton will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. Both were born and raised here. After they were married they lived in Worcester and Connecticut. They raised two children, Stuart and Debbie. Now they have been back on the Island for many years where Jan has enjoyed years of taking care of many animals from chickens to horses, dogs and cats, and even a pet seagull that would knock on the door when he missed dinner time.

Floyd has his love for the water and has fished and spent many years as a captain on the Chappy ferry. But they did this all together and being married this many years is a feat in itself these days, so here is to a very happy anniversary and to many more years together.

There is not much going on in the social scene these days but the Patriots are keeping the blood warm this winter as they go for another playoff game in Denver.

Even if you are not a sports enthusiast the games have been very gravitating. I personally like football but a few of my friends could care less but I find even them watching the game now. So for the next few weeks there are going to be some nail biting until we get to the Super Bowl. Go Pats!

If you are in search of something to do for your children on February vacation, Felix Neck has a few things going on: Feb. 23, Wild Things; Feb. 24, Take to the Skies; Thursday, Feb. 25, Adapt!

All programs are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is required at massaudubon.org.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
