Lobsterville Beach is ready for summer, with newly replenished sand and natural beach grass to keep it in place.

The beach is one of the only access points for West Basin Beach, a popular fishing spot, and was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Dredging at Menemsha supplied fresh sand for the beach, and on April 24, 74 volunteers came out to Lobsterville to plant natural beach grass on the shoreline.

The beach grass stabilizes and protects the sand at Lobsterville and protects the dunes.

Bret Stearns, natural resources director for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) said 19,000 stems of beach grass were planted, about 17,500 of them off Lobsterville Road.

The beach grass was funded through a grant awarded to the Wampanoag Tribe from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for projects that restore areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
